A career path enhancer many people are beginning to tap into is in online education. Millions of students are choosing to increase their knowledge through online courses via video and other online projects, and many experts are choosing to join this community as well.

Many online education platforms allow instructors themselves to teach about a subject they are skilled in students willing to learn. Udemy and Teachable are two platforms that provide quality online education, but each website serves a distinctly different purpose and is catered to different audiences. See which of these two educational tools is right for you by reading more below!

Teachable vs. Udemy

Udemy - The Basics

Udemy is all about options and giving you a ton of different types of courses in a wealth of different categories. Their courses fall under the following groups:

  • Development
  • Business
  • Finance & Accounting
  • IT & Software
  • Office Productivity
  • Personal Development
  • Design
  • Marketing
  • Lifestyle
  • Photography
  • Health & Fitness
  • Music
  • Teaching & Academics

Let's say you're trying to improve your brand. Udemy has courses on social media marketing, graphic design, and even search engine optimization. Maybe you're trying to gain more knowledge for a career in business. Udemy has courses on everything from finance to sales to taxes.

Each course varies in cost but is generally around the $9.99 range for each of their hundreds of thousands of courses. For more expensive and in-depth courses, Udemy coupons can easily be found online to save!

Teachable - The Basics

Teachable is another educational platform that first and foremost serves as a place where instructors can create and sell their online courses, but they do also offer courses in the following categories:

  • Business and Marketing
  • Course Creation
  • Tech and Programming
  • Health and Fitness

Teachable mainly serves as an educational platform for instructors and not merely students. Teachable's method is pretty simple: you sign up and are given a custom website where you will build your "school". Your school's website contains custom courses created by you which can include course content, videos, quizzes, and more. You can easily engage with students who enroll in your class and also track your school's earnings.

If you on the student side of Teachable, you can choose from 186k active courses alongside 68k students. The educational platform branded Discover by Teachable is a bit more limited in their scope of courses. The cost of these courses are pretty expensive, some costing hundreds of dollars.

Udemy and Teachable - Major Differences

1. Purpose: The biggest difference between Udemy and Teachable is the purpose their platforms serve. While Teachable does offer courses through its affiliate course marketplace, its primary purpose is enabling instructors to create and market their courses. Udemy is more focused on actually learning a variety of skills.

2. Price: The cost of online courses can be a huge deterrent for someone who is trying to afford an education on a budget, and Teachable's courses can break the bank. You can get identical classes on Udemy for just a few bucks as compared to a few hundred on Teachable.

3. Instructors: For the most part, Udemy is known for having quality instructors who have proven expertise in their field. With Teachable, just about anyone can create and sell a course. The instructors are not 100% guaranteed to be as reliable or knowledgeable as Udemy's.

4. Course Information and Content: With Udemy courses, you get a plethora of materials when you enroll from videos to quizzes to downloadable resources. Teachable is primary video heavy and doesn't dive into too much information about the courses themselves.

5. Support: Udemy has excellent customer support and guidance and an ability to contact instructors. Teachable has great support on the course building side, but not as much on the course side.

Final Recommendation - Udemy

Udemy is far superior in its variety of courses than Teachable is and has dozens of courses for anyone to choose from. Teachable has a great course building feature but falls short in its course subject matter. If you're looking to take courses and progress your learning, Udemy is the way to go. For instructors looking to build a course, consider Teachable.
