Saatva is a popular option among customers shopping for mattresses online for several reasons. Saatva was founded in 2011 and provides luxury mattresses in a direct-to-consumer model. This allows Saatva customers to purchase high-quality mattresses at prices lower than comparable models found at brick and mortar showrooms.

Saatva mattresses are built with eco-friendly products like recycled steel and organic cotton. In fact, the brand name Saatva comes from a word in Sanskrit, "sattva," which means "pure". This is representative of the Saatva commitment to a small carbon footprint.

Purchasing a mattress online from Saatva allows customers to customize several options. Various mattress comfort levels are available for selection and customers can decide between a solid or adjustable base. In addition to the hybrid innerspring Saatva Classic mattress, Saatva sells several other models. These include the Loom & Leaf (ultra-premium memory foam), the Zenhaven (100% natural Talalay latex), the Saatva HD (luxury hybrid for bigger bodies), and more.

Saatva Review

Who is a Saatva Mattress Good For?

We recommend Saatva for most sleepers. Side sleepers or people under 130 lbs may find Saatva to be too firm and should consider other options. Heavier individuals and stomach or back sleepers rate their experience with Saatva as being above average, according to reviews found online. Here are Saatva mattress recommendations for all types of sleepers.

  • Side Sleepers: Plush Soft - Only the Plus Soft Saatva mattress provides enough body-contouring for side sleepers.
  • Back Sleepers: Luxury Firm - The Luxury Firm provides plenty of support for back sleepers! It also has decent motion isolation for people who share their bed.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Luxury Firm or Firm - Stomach sleepers should opt for a firmness that will support the lumbar region. Both the Luxury Firm and Firm are good options.
  • Combo Sleepers: Luxury Firm - The Luxury Firm is ideal for combo sleepers as it provides just the right mix of body-contouring ability and support.
  • Heavy Individuals: Firm - Individuals over 230 lbs should start their search at Saatva with the most support available.
  • Light Individuals: Plush Soft - Individuals under 130 lbs will likely find the Luxury Firm and Firm Saatva mattresses to be too hard.

Saatva Mattress Construction

Saatva mattresses are available in 11.5" or 14.5" thickness. There is no price differential between the two thicknesses, however, the coil length in the 14.5" model is longer and provides more support for heavier sleepers. Saatva mattresses have a basic construction that each varying comfort level either adds to or subtracts from. Here is how Saatva mattresses are constructed, from top to bottom.

1. Cover

Each mattress features a top layer of foam padding for extra softness. This Euro-top cover contains 1.25" of soft polyfoam in the Plush Soft and Luxury Firm options. In the Firm mattress, there is 1.5" of firm polyfoam. Each of these options includes a .75" layer of Dacron fiber under the polyfoam layer. The cover is made of organic cotton.

2. Comfort Layer

Next is the 1" of polyfoam comfort layer and a secondary layer of memory foam. This Saatva layer will vary in firmness depending on the comfort level selected.

3. Transitional Layer

Between the soft top layers and the final support layer is the transitional layer. The transitional layer contains 4" recycled steel pocketed coils. The purpose of this layer is to prevent sleepers from sinking into the very firm and dense support layer during the night.

4. Support Layer

Here is the final layer of support in Saatva mattresses. This layer contains 14.5-gauge recycled steel coils. In the 11.5" thick mattress, these coils are 4" and in the thicker 14.5" mattress, they are 7".

Off-Gassing?

Saatva is committed to using materials in their foam that are certified by CertiPUR-US as being low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and having no toxic chemicals, ozone depleters or formaldehyde. On their blog, Saatva claims that their mattresses are "shipped stable". This means that any off-gassing of Saatva mattresses occurs before the customer receives it.

Saatva Mattress Comfort Levels

Saatva uses a 10-point scale to rate how firm or soft a mattress is, "1" being the softest and "10" the firmest.

Plush Soft

Plush Soft is for those who prefer soft mattresses over firm. It is the softest option available for the Saatva Classic hybrid innerspring mattress, ranking at a "3" on the Saatva 10-point scale of comfort. It includes an additional 2.5" super soft regular foam top layer. Of all the Saatva mattress options, the Plush Soft is the top choice for side sleepers. This is because the Plush Soft will do a better job of contouring to your body. This makes side sleeping more comfortable. It is also the ideal mattress for lighter individuals. Other Saatva mattresses may be too firm to respond to people who weigh less than 130 lbs. The Plush Soft option is recommended for couples as it provides the most motion isolation of all the Saatva Classic mattresses.

Luxury Firm

Luxury Firm comes in at a "5-7" on the Saatva comfort level scale. This is the most popular mattress from Saatva and scores well with sleepers of all types. The Luxury Firm mattress is made of the same materials as the Plush Soft, except it does not include the added super soft regular foam. Sleepers will enjoy equal parts support and body-contouring while using the Luxury Firm mattress. The combination of support and contouring can be beneficial for anyone attributing back pain to their sleep position. Motion isolation on the Luxury Firm does not perform as well as on the Plush Soft.

Firm

The Saatva Firm an "8" on the 10-point scale. It is an ideal option for heavier individuals or stomach sleepers. Heavier sleepers will enjoy the high-level of support provided by the Firm Saatva mattress. Stomach sleepers also enjoy this level of firmness because it provides extra support for your lumbar region and reduces neck pains. We highly recommend side sleepers select a mattress other than Firm when shopping Saatva. Compared to the build of the Luxury Firm, the Firm also does not include the super soft regular foam layer. Additionally, the ounce of Dacron fabric found in the Luxury Firm top layer is omitted in the firm. Finally, the Firm has 7/8" regular foam in the middle layer as opposed to the 5/8" soft regular foam found in the Plush Soft and Luxury Firm. The Firm has the least motion isolation and most bounce of all three options.

Saatva Mattress Foundations

In addition to eco-friendly mattresses, Saatva gives customers the opportunity to purchase a Saatva foundation with their online order. Saatva offers two basic foundations. Using a foundation or boxspring with a Saatva mattress will reduce the wear and tear experienced over the life of the mattress. It will also improve airflow and allow the mattress to stay cooler during hot nights. Here is information on each of the Saatva mattress foundations.

Standard Foundation

The Saatva standard foundation available through Saatva does not offer the ability to adjust mattress incline. It is available in two heights. There is a 8.75" foundation and a lower sitting 4.75" model. Both options provide ample support as a base for your Saatva mattress and are made with eco-friendly and organic materials. Saatva also allows customers to purchase a basic metal frame to hold the mattress. This basic metal frame is the cheapest foundation option from Saatva and stands at 7.5" high.

Lineal Adjustable Base

Those looking for added customization and control with their mattress will opt for the lineal adjustable base. This base is only available with the 11.5" thickness Saatva mattress. It can not be paired with the thicker 14.5" mattress. Saatva provides a remote control with the lineal adjustable base which can be used to change the height of the head and feet regions. The remote includes the ability to create custom settings but also comes with presets. The most popular preset is "Zero-Gravity," which mimics the position of astronauts in space and may reduce stress and strain on the body by raising the feet to the heart area. In addition to preset settings, the lineal adjustable base includes a body massage feature with 3 speeds. This massage can be targeted to the head or feet only, or can be selected as a full-body wave.

One of the main factors that sets Saatva apart from competitors is their commitment to using eco-friendly materials. Pillow top foams are CertiPUR-US certified. There are no toxic chemicals in Saatva products and for a lot of customers, this can be a major differentiating factor. In addition to using safe materials, Saatva makes their products in US factories.

For side sleepers who want to try Saatva, we recommend starting with the Plush Soft and seeing if it provides enough body contouring for restful sleep. For most sleepers, the Saatva Luxury Firm will be a good choice. It provides enough contouring and support for most sleepers.

Finally, setting up a Saatva mattress on a lineal adjustable base can enhance sleep to all-new levels. Enjoy one of the preset settings, like "Zero-Gravity," or create your own.
